Blooms Taxonomy
iPadagogy
This website is a great way to integrate technology (specifically, iPad apps) and the Cognitive Domain of Bloom's Taxonomy. Ultimately, unless we do something about it, all the discussion and theorizing about how to write educational objectives, organize our teaching practice and categorize our activities and 'action words' is futile. This infographic and accompanying links and blog posts helps instructors apply Bloom's Taxonomy. I expect this wheel will continue to evolve over time now that iPads (and other tablet devices) are becoming ubiquitous in higher education.

Motivational Techniques
Vanderbilt University - Motivating Students
The adjacent photo is of some highly intrinsically motivated Yukon athletes. Motivation is a complex topic and adult learners are much more complex than your average sled dog. I find this website is a concise and helpful way to understand the concept of motivation. Most importantly it contains key examples of how to build intrinsic motivation with lesson activities as well as some cue phrases that instructors can use within a lesson to build student interest in the subject matter. I can use the strategies and highlight these cue phrases when constructing my lesson plans.

Assessment
Peer & Self-Assessment Guide
I am a big believer in the value of self-assessment of and as learning. This brief but well-referenced guide to creating effective peer and self-assessments is a useful tool for writing lesson plans that include elements of peer and self-assessment. I especially like that this article reminds us that students need to be taught how to effectively self-assess and that they need to be supported through the process. Time for this instruction needs to be built into our lessons (or lesson plans need to be built for this explicit purpose). The article gives us a few ideas about how to do this.

Instructional Strategies
Icebreakers and Energizers
Photovoice is an innovative and engaging vehicle for community and personal advocacy and development. Their website contains numerous resources that are used in participatory photography programs and which can be adapted for use in many group-based adult education contexts. I especially like this well-organized compilation of ice breakers and energizers. As we know, the initial, 'forming' stages of the group process can be the most critical to ensure a healthy, well-functioning group. These activities can be used as lessons themselves or as part of lessons at the early stages of any group-based process.

Multimedia TED Ed We've all seen the clever, inspiring, creative and pithy TED talk videos. They can be quite engaging, but think about what a highly skilled educator could do with such novel content and skillful delivery? Enter TED Ed, a platform that allows you to utilize not just any TED video, but any Youtube video, as the basis for a lesson on any topic. It allows an educator to insert a variety of interactive elements into any video and monitor student engagement. I will definitely be looking for ways to incorporate this resource into my lesson planning. | |
